What Netlify is for

Hosting is what keeps your site online for anyone to open. Netlify takes your code from GitHub, builds it and publishes it, and adds small server functions and ready-made forms so a simple product doesn't need its own server. Everything is paid in monthly credits.

How it plugs into your product

  1. 1Sign up, connect the GitHub repository and pick the branch to publish.
  2. 2Netlify builds the site on every push; previews are free, production deploys spend credits.
  3. 3Add your secret keys as environment variables and, if needed, put API code in Netlify Functions.
  4. 4Connect your domain and choose a paid plan with auto recharge if the site can't go down.

Does it fit your idea?

It fits if

  • A landing page or waitlist that needs a contact form without writing a back end.
  • A solo founder with a front-end SaaS who publishes a few times a week and wants a $9 plan.
  • A content site in Astro or another static generator with moderate traffic.

Look elsewhere if

  • You publish to production many times a day, since each deploy costs 15 credits.
  • Your app serves heavy files or video, since each GB of traffic costs 20 credits.
  • Your API needs requests longer than 60 seconds or a server that stays on.

What people only find out after building

Read this before you build on it. Each item links to the official page that says so.

  • The free plan has a hard limit of 300 credits. When they run out, every project on the account is paused and visitors see 'Site not available' until next month. You can't buy more on Free.

  • On paid plans auto recharge is off by default. To keep sites up past the monthly credits, a team owner has to turn it on; then each top-up is $5 for 500 credits (Personal) or $10 for 1,500 (Pro).

  • Functions run in Ohio (US) by default. Moving them closer to users in Europe or Asia to cut latency is only available on Pro.

  • A normal function stops at 60 seconds and you can't raise it. Longer work has to go to Background Functions, capped at 15 minutes.

What it costs in practice

Personal plan, $9/month with 1,000 credits: 30 production deploys (450) + 15 GB of traffic (300) + 500,000 requests (100) + 5 GB-hours of functions (50) = 900 credits. It fits, with little room left. Estimate.
