- An afternoon for a static site; a day or two if your back end needs changes to fit the Workers runtime.
What Cloudflare is for
Hosting is the computer that keeps your app online so anyone can open it. Cloudflare runs your site and your API code (Workers) on servers in hundreds of cities, so each user gets an answer from somewhere close. You push code to GitHub and it goes live, with no server to rent or maintain.
How it plugs into your product
- 1Create a free Cloudflare account and connect your GitHub repository.
- 2Pick your framework (Astro, Next.js, React…); Cloudflare builds and publishes it on every push.
- 3Add your secret keys (database, payments) as environment variables in the dashboard.
- 4Point your domain to Cloudflare and switch to Workers Paid ($5/month) before real traffic arrives.
Does it fit your idea?
It fits if
- A SaaS with a JavaScript front end and a light API (login, CRUD, webhooks) that wants a bill near $5 a month.
- A landing page or blog that must load fast worldwide without paying for bandwidth.
- An app that already uses Supabase or another hosted database and only needs the code to run somewhere.
Look elsewhere if
- Your back end processes videos, generates big PDFs or runs jobs that take minutes of heavy CPU.
- Your code depends on libraries that spawn processes or use native Node modules (Puppeteer, sharp, ffmpeg).
- You need a regular always-on server (WebSocket game server, Python worker, cron that runs for hours).
What people only find out after building
Read this before you build on it. Each item links to the official page that says so.
On the free plan each request gets only 10 ms of CPU time. Code that works on your laptop can fail once it does real work, like hashing passwords or parsing a big file. Paid raises it to 30 seconds by default.
Official source: developers.cloudflare.comThe free plan stops at 100,000 requests a day (reset at midnight UTC). Past that, visitors get Error 1027 until the next day.
Official source: developers.cloudflare.comWorkers is not full Node.js. Modules like child_process, worker_threads and vm are empty stubs: they import fine but don't work, so some npm packages break only in production.
Official source: developers.cloudflare.comEach Worker has 128 MB of memory, on free and paid. Loading a big file or image into memory crashes it with Error 1102.
Official source: developers.cloudflare.comFree builds run one at a time and stop after 20 minutes, with 3,000 build minutes a month.

What it costs in practice
A SaaS with 3 million API requests a month at about 5 ms of CPU each uses 15 million CPU ms. Workers Paid includes 10 million requests and 30 million CPU ms, so the bill is the $5 minimum. Doubling traffic still fits. Estimate.
