What Mixpanel is for
Mixpanel answers product questions like "how many people who signed up last week came back?" or "which step of checkout loses the most users?". Your app sends an event for each important action, and anyone on the team builds funnel and retention charts by clicking, with no SQL. It measures behavior inside the product, not where site traffic came from.
How it plugs into your product
- 1Create a free account and a project for your app.
- 2Write a short tracking plan: the 10 to 20 events that matter, like "signed up" and "paid".
- 3Install the SDK, call identify after login and send each event from the app or the server.
- 4Build funnel and retention reports and watch the monthly event count before it reaches 1M.
Does it fit your idea?
It fits if
- Your SaaS has a PM or growth person who checks retention every week and wants to build reports alone.
- You're under 1M events a month and want unlimited seats for the whole team for free.
- You sell a B2B app and need to compare cohorts by plan, company or sign-up month.
Look elsewhere if
- You only want to know where site visitors come from: Google Analytics or Plausible is simpler.
- You also want feature flags and error tracking in the same tool and bill: PostHog bundles them.
- Nobody on the team can write tracking code; without events sent from the app, the reports stay empty.
What people only find out after building
Read this before you build on it. Each item links to the official page that says so.
On the free plan there's no overage bill, but past 1M events in a month you lose access to reports until you upgrade or the month resets.
Official source: docs.mixpanel.comMonthly billing costs about 40% more than yearly: 1.5M events is $140/month paid monthly versus $100/month paid yearly.

What it costs in practice
A SaaS with 3,000 active users at 500 events each sends 1.5M events a month: $0 for the first 1M, then $140/month on monthly billing or $100/month paid yearly ($1,200/year). Rough estimate.
